A detriment in this sense is a legal expression. Detriment short of dismissal covers unfair action by an employer against an employee during employment. Examples include refusal of access to training or refusal to promote on grounds of, say, belonging to a trade union.
Where you believe you have suffered such a detriment at work you should first bring a formal grievance under your employers grievance procedure. If you fail to have the problem resolved or properly investigated by your employer, you could then consider bringing a complaint about your employers' actions causing a detriment to you, to an employment tribunal. Remember that this must be done within the specified time limit.
