Many employers that regulate employees’ dress choose to provide clothing, a shopping allowance, or a discount on clothing. This is not necessarily compulsory for the employer however, and is a factor you need to consider when taking a job. Whether it is reasonable for the employer to make a financial contribution will depend on factors such as how unusual the clothes are, how much wear and tear they suffer, and how much importance the employer places on presentation.
Special rules apply for protective clothing. See our health and safety section for more details.
