Employers can encourage applications from lesbian, gay or bisexual candidates if this is to compensate for under-representation or for other disadvantages. However, they can only limit recruitment to a particular post to someone of a specific sexual orientation, if they can demonstrate that the post requires the employee to have that sexual orientation. This is called a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) and requires the employer to follow very demanding guidelines if they are to prove the need for such a limitation.
