head head head

I have to drive a lot for work over the winter, what should I be aware of?

At this time of year everything seems to have to be done at once. The Christmas and New Year holidays mean everyone wants it yesterday and there is more to be done. More post to be delivered, more payments to be made, more deliveries to be dropped off, more services to be connected and maintenance to be done - just at the time when the days are shorter and darker and the weather can be at its worst. Your employer has a legal duty to ensure that there is a risk assessment for the work you are doing, and that includes driving. See our section on driving for work for more information.

Always make sure someone knows where you have gone (you may even need to set a time to phone in) and only use your mobile phone when your vehicle is stationary. So if you drive for your work, ask your boss for the driving risk assessment. If you are not satisfied talk to your boss or to the Health and Safety Executive, and of course always speak to your trade union safety rep.
