Children are defined for employment purposes, as below compulsory school age. This is nominally 16 years of age, but may vary between 15 years and 8 months and 16 years and 7 months depending on the statutory school leaving date and the pupil's birthday.
The relevant EC Directive (94/33) defines child as 'any young person of less than 15 years of age or who is still subject to compulsory full-time schooling under national law'.
A young person is a person whose age is above compulsory school age, but below 18.
