If you are doing the same, or broadly similar work as a worker of the opposite sex in the same establishment you are entitled to equal pay. There has to be someone of the opposite sex, with whom you can compare (a 'comparator') your work with theirs.
Differences such as payment for extra responsibilities are permitted, providing the differences are not based on the sex of the worker.
Claims must be made to employment tribunals within the specified time limits but only after using your employer's internal complaints procedures and giving your employer the chance to respond.
The law applies to all workers, regardless of their age
