working hours, holidays, breaks and leave

Thanks to the European Working Time Directive, most people at work have a basic set of working time rights that cover how long they can work each week, how often they should get breaks and how much holiday they should get each year.

There’s also special protection for night workers and enhanced protection for young workers.

You can also take time off for various family reasons such as maternity, paternity and parental leave. The Government plans to extend the right to request flexible working to all employees in 2014.
