Do I need representation?

It is possible to represent yourself at a tribunal, and the judge or panel hearing the case will, within limits, probably give you some assistance.

However, although some people do successfully represent themselves, particularly in simpler cases, it is always best to try and have your own representative who is familiar with the way tribunals work.

This is particularly important if your employer is going to be legally represented, and many automatically do this. You do not necessarily need to be legally represented. Union full-time officers are very experienced in taking cases to tribunals. If you are not in a union then you can consider employing your own solicitor, although, as costs are rarely awarded at tribunals, you will not normally be able to claim legal costs back from the other side if you win.
