Can I choose whether my pay is paid in cash or direct to my bank account?

The repeal of the Truck Acts some years ago meant that employees lost their right to payment of wages in cash, although a small minority of employers still do so. The method of payment is now a matter for agreement between you and your employer. Most employers will pay directly into the employee's bank, building society or other account. This is not only administratively convenient for the employer but also minimises any security risk. If your contract of employment says that you will be paid in cash, but your employer now wants to switch to another method, e.g. payment directly into your bank account, your employer should agree this with you (or your trade union) first, as it amounts to a variation or change of your contract
