Under UK law, parents with children under six, or disabled children under 18, will have the right to request flexible working. From April 2007, employees who care for adults (for e.g. those who are elderly or sick) will also have this right. Flexible working covers changes to methods of working and working hours, so could also include teleworking.
Employers have a duty under law to give serious consideration to such requests. However, it should be noted that teleworking is not guaranteed under the right, and an employer may legitimately refuse a request for flexible working.
