How can I claim equal pay for work of equal value?

If you are doing work different from that of a worker of the opposite sex in the same establishment, but the different jobs are equal in value, you are entitled to equal pay.

You would have to show that the different work would be rated as equivalent under a job evaluation scheme, had there been one.

There has to be someone of the opposite sex, with whom you can compare (a 'comparator').

Differences such as payment for extra responsibilities are permitted, providing the differences are not based on the sex of the worker.

Claims for equal pay for equal work are made to employment tribunals within the specified time limits.

If the tribunal accepted the claim it would appoint an expert to investigate and confirm whether or not the different types of work were of equal value.
