Although there is no specific legislation on exposure to EMFs at work, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations means that your employer must conduct a risk assessment to find out what hazards you may be exposed to, and then control these risks. (See our section on Hazards and Risks.) This includes exposure to EMFs. However, the Health and Safety Executive admits that, because these Regulations do not specifically mention EMFs, many employers are probably unaware of the risks they pose.
The National Radiological Protection Board produces guidelines on occupational exposure to EMFs, and although these are not law the Health and Safety Executive expects that employers follow these guidelines.
