What is the menopause?

Also known as 'the change', the one to three-year period that we call the menopause is a normal part of the ageing process. Your ovaries gradually produce less and less of the hormones progesterone and oestrogen until your periods finally stop completely.

Changes in oestrogen levels during the menopause can result in intermittent symptoms. Some women experience few or no symptoms, for others they are severe. Typical physical symptoms include 'hot flushes', headaches, fatigue and sweating. Psychological symptoms include an increased susceptibility to anxiety, irritability and stress, and sometimes problems with short-term memory.

Recognising these changes can help in making the link between workplace health and safety and problems experienced through the menopausal phase.
