The laws prohibiting discrimination against disabled people in the workplace can now be found in the Equality Act 2010, which replaces the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Disability is defined as: 'a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on the ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities'.
To bring a claim under the old law, the 'normal day-to-day activities' that an individual found difficult to perform needed to be included in a list that appeared in a schedule to the Act. This list has now been abolished and 'normal day-to-day activities' is now given its ordinary, common sense meaning.
