The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system – the body’s defence against disease. Someone infected with HIV is considered to have developed Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) when their immune system is so compromised they cannot fight off the normal range of diseases.
