Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are generated by electric charges and include the Earth's magnetic field, fields from the electricity supply, and radio waves from TV, radio, mobile phones, radar and satellite communications. The UK's electricity supply is at 50 Hertz (Hz) and the part of the electromagnetic spectrum from zero to 300 Hz is known as Extremely Low Frequency (ELF).
Magnetic fields are measured in Teslas (T) and electric fields in Volts per metre (V/m). Magnetic fields and electric fields exist together. This is nicely explained on the National Radiological Protection Board's website.
The strength of EMFs falls rapidly the further you get from the source, and most common building materials screen out electric fields (but not magnetic fields).
