What about wireless internet (Wi-Fi) connections?

Wireless internet uses radio waves at a particular frequency to transmit and receive data. They are a form of non-ionising radiation. It is unclear what the health effects of Wi-Fi networks are, and more research is needed.

Wi-Fi networks broadcast at a lower power than mobile phone networks, with the effect diminishing the further from the source of transmission. The World Health Organisation says:

“Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF [radiofrequency] signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.”

Anecdotal evidence points to there being a negative effect on some people’s health. And some experts have suggested taking a few measures:

  • Do not use a laptop directly on your lap – place it on a table.
  • Turn off the wireless function of your router/modem and/or laptop if you are not using it.
  • If possible, locate the modem/router away from workstations.
