Should my employer introduce an HIV and AIDS policy?

Yes. Here's what C. Sweeney, Equality and Diversity Manager of Barclays Bank said: "Having good policies and procedures benefits the business by becoming the employer of choice, attracting new talent, being seen as an enlightened employer, retaining current staff, and attracting/retaining customers. The list is endless."

With new HIV treatments, people living with HIV and AIDS can be productive and contribute to society. But discrimination often prevents them from doing so. HIV-related discrimination can be subtle. People do not even have to be HIV-positive to be discriminated against on grounds of HIV. They might face prejudice simply because of their personal association with someone living with HIV, such as a work colleague, a partner or family member.

Without an appropriate HIV and AIDS policy companies may not be complying with the law and treating HIV-positive employees fairly. An HIV and AIDS policy could protect companies from HIV-related discrimination complaints.
