According to the 2009/10 British Crime Survey (BCS), there was an estimated 366,000 threats of violence and 310,000 physical assaults by members of the public on workers that year.
A 2010 survey of shopworkers by USDAW suggested that during that year more than a million shopworkers had been subjected to abuse, threats and violence. 6% of shopworkers were subjected to violent attack, 37% were threatened with harm and a massive 70% suffered verbal abuse. The survey identifies the need to ask for ID as a particular flashpoint for abuse.
