Is asbestos now banned?

Yes. The government banned its use in new buildings and products from November 1999, after a long campaign by trade unions and the TUC, local health and safety organisations and others such as Hazards magazine. But there is still a great deal of asbestos in place in older buildings. Stripping it out is high risk.
