How should I go about doing a stress risk assessment?

The Health and Safety Executive's Management Standards and the 5 Steps to Risk Assessment provides a clear and stepwise approach. You can read these in full on the HSE website hse.gov.uk

Firstly secure commitment from the employer and also employees and their reps. Also review current stress policy and consider any possible changes.

Step 1: Identify the hazards, referring to the Management Standards.

Step 2: Identify those at risk and how they are at risk.

Step 3: Evaluate the risk and take action.

Step 4: Record your findings – develop an action plan.

Step 5: Monitor the action plan and review effectiveness.

HSE has published a host of downloads to help with this process with examples of stress policies and guidance through each of the 5 steps. www.hse.gov.uk/stress
