Dermatitis is common in the print industry. According to the HSE, around four print workers in 10 have suffered from a skin complaint at some time. A recent survey by the Graphical, Paper and Media Union (GPMU) suggests that many cases of dermatitis are caused not by chemicals but by friction and irritation due to repeated washing.
Worst affected areas are fingers, the webs between them and the backs of the hands. Those working with printing presses, especially cleaning rollers and cylinders, are most likely to suffer skin problems.
The main irritant products include developers, etching solutions, cleaning solvents, inks, glues, gums, oils and greases.
