head head head

What if it gets unpleasant?

There should be no grounds for a row – at least not at this stage. If there is a row, you shouldn't be the one to start it, because you're simply asking for something, and a reasonable boss will consider your request properly.

Sadly, some bosses just don't get it, and the only way to get a reaction out of them is to resign or show them a letter from another firm offering you a job. Sometimes that's just the way it is, and negotiating from a position of strength is the only language some bosses understand.

In other cases, though, your boss may have fairly judged that you're not ready for the move upward, or that the right position isn't there for you. Be gracious, accept the decision, and then decide how to proceed.

If you're going to threaten to resign, make sure your reasons are more sound than simple frustration, and mean it. Or knuckle down and wait for the next time. At the very least, you've put your name on the table.
