Many employers advertise themselves as believers in equal opportunities, and some genuinely are. But employers need to be aware that prejudices, old boys’ networks, blinkered views, cliques, in-crowds and corruption can all get in the way of creating equal chances for all. Trade union representatives can help keep the pressure on to make sure the right practices are being followed. Talk to your rep in the first instance if you have a problem. They can discuss it with you first, to see if you really do have a case, before taking any further action. Managers are likely to be defensive if they are accused of flouting equal opportunities rules, so it is best to be ready with hard evidence, not just hear-say or innuendo.
There are statutory bodies which exist to help in these cases too: the Equal Opportunities Commission www.eoc.org.uk - helpline - 0845 601 5901, and the Commission for Racial Equality www.cre.gov.uk tel: 020 7939 0000. Stonewall www.stonewall.org.uk tel: 020 7881 9440 is an active campaigner for gay and lesbian rights.
