With the amount of media coverage that graduates get, you could be excused for thinking a degree from a university is the only way to get started on a career. For many jobs, of course, university is the best or only way to begin, but for plenty of others the first step is along another training road, one that often involves getting direct working experience from day one. Vocational qualifications, foundation degrees and modern apprenticeships are very often the best way to start out on the career you want.
