Switch all computer equipment, appliances, motors and machinery off when not in use, for example overnight or at lunchtime. Modern appliances still use a lot of energy if they're just left on standby.
Appliances are designed to cope with being turned on and off frequently, and switching off a PC overnight isn't going to hurt it. Talk to your employer's IT department if you think that computers might need to be left on overnight to install system updates - there may be another way to work this out.
