head head head

How do you break the news that you're leaving?

Even if it’s your boss who’s been giving you hell, it’s best to resist the temptation to burst through the door and announce your resignation with a big grin on your face. If your employer has a well organised staffing policy, there may be an exit interview with a human resources professional at which you can express your reservations about your boss, but otherwise try to remain as civil as possible.

At the very least, staying on decent terms could mean that you get some flexibility on your notice period and receive any money you are owed without complications. In the longer term, it’s worth remembering that you’ve both been working in the same industry, and no matter what your immediate plans you never know when you might meet again.

The same applies to your colleagues or staff. The fact that you’re moving on will make some of them well aware that they’re not, so don’t rub it in. Dancing around the corridors singing won’t do much for your relationships with them and, as with your boss, you never know when and in what circumstances you might meet again. It’s also worth making a genuine effort to keep in touch because, whatever your plans, your network can never be too big.
