How do I get started in choosing a career?

Before you start your career, you have more options than you’ll ever have again. From where you are now, the number of career paths you can take is genuinely limitless, and that’s the most important thing to keep in mind as you begin the process of making a choice.

Not everyone can do everything, it’s true, and there are natural limits to each individual’s abilities, but hard work, talent and learning can get you to places that you can now only imagine reaching. At this point, your imagination is the real limit to your possibilities, so let it run free.

On a blank sheet of paper, write down all the jobs you’d dream of doing. Be as bold and ambitious as you can. Fancy being an astronaut? Write it down. A prima ballerina? Write it down. Tinker, tailor, soldier, life guard, furniture restorer, meteorologist, mechanic, plumber? Down it goes. Don’t be shy. Let one idea trigger another, and get them all down. No one else will see this list unless you want them to. It’s not a life plan. It’s just a good way of getting started, of getting the ideas flowing, and it can sometimes tell you more about yourself than you ever knew.
